Sony wasn't the only one to make camcorders with infrared night vision capability. Sharp's version of NightShot was called "Super Cat's Eye", and at least on this VL-WD650 MiniDV camcorder, it works quite well.

I always use the LCD. On camcorders which give you both, the viewfinder is really only useful in outdoor conditions where the LCD might get washed out by the sun. This Sharp definitely is a rather quirky camcorder, perhaps as much so as the Hitachi Digital8 camcorder. The test video here was made using only the camcorder's DIS. I was unpleasantly surprised? at how badly it makes the image warp and wobble after you stop moving.

When you are recording, do you prefer to use the swing out display or "up? close" viewfinder? Super Cat's Eye really seems to do a very credible job. I'm impressed by how quiet that tape mechanism is, though I do hear the focus motor rattling and the zoom motor. Outside of the goofy 16:9 mode, my only complaint is the ergonomics. The design looks a little clunky. Were you using the Youtube image stabilizer along with the camera's stabilization?

My digital camera uses SmartMedia (yeah its old). I have a Sandisk 12-in-1 which has a SM slot. I could never understand why they? made these cameras take stills, they all look like crap (even on my "Megapixel" DCR-TRV840). I hate those DC dongles, I noticed Panasonic used them on their MiniDV cameras. That is a bulky MiniDV unit though, gotta be from like 1999 or so. Oh and JVC's low light system was called NightScope.

Thanks...I used a f-adapter and a stepping ring. For a good quality image, focus the scope on a star, then auto focus them? cam to the scopes image, then flick to manual. It will then stay focused. Also play with the manual exposure levels. For skywatching., at least a gen 2 tube is needed for best results.

Alex, it appears this is a much better camera. U will need more? lights for the night. A word of caution, the camera has a hard drive so do not jar, bump,large vibration(speaker sound),etc. This will damage the internal drive in a short time.. Also without a doubt keep it away from any magnetic field.(speakers) This will damage the drive real quick. Hope it helpes the life of it. Good luck!

The bar is mounted to the scope with a couple of wooden blocks, bored to right diameter and screwed together by hand with wing nuts. Quite secure. I used a £14 IR led rated 3w off Ebay. The torches are probably fine for up to 20m but I'm using rim fire so need a bit more range. After experimanting with the objective lense from a throw away pair of binoculars, I found I could get an intense beam, good for shooting? out to 50 m at least. All housed in pvc drain pipe. 3x AA batts to 4.5 volt Cont

Your vids have done a lot for my pest control. We have hens and as such always have a few rats. I? can usually get one or two in the last evening light before its too dark to see. Que my old Sony camcorder, believed made redundant in the late '90's. Obviously put off with price tag of a proper night sight, I set to work. I really like the idea of 'retro fit' night vision as it means the scope never needs re-sighting. The camcorder is fitted to a steel bar by its tripod mount. Cont'd.

here is a cheaper,? easier way to do this project, buy a cheap digital camera with a 3" screen then buy a lcd view finder for digital cameras, then carefully open the camera and remove the infrared filter, then put it back together, and attach the infra red LED's powered by a 9v battery, and it is waaaay cheaper, and way easier

They are not satellites or even airplanes, I can see them with my naked eye, once gets dark in a very clear night, they look like a bright stars traveling across the sky at high speed or slow speed, "I have spoted up to 15 of them making zigzagging just in 1 hour, specially if you are in a very dark place where city lights are far away.? good job mate.

Get a lens? assembly like you'd find in an old VCR recorder, it should get your eye closer to the screen. You can probably find one at a garage sale or goodwill, etc.

if? you remove the IR filter, dont replace it with a piece of film. just leave it clear so you can use it by day and night. with nothing in front of the sensor you get every light possible.
